Abstract

FALOMIR PARKER, Ricardo. Identity, beliefs and reality: possible themes for a Freudian anthropology. Alteridades [online]. 2010, vol.20, n.39, pp.127-134. ISSN 2448-850X.

The text examines the relationship between anthropology and Freudian psychoanalysis through a historical description of their mutual influences. The author argues that both cultural and psychological determinism have lead to a dead end in the dialogue between both disciplines. Some of the topics that anthropology and psychoanalysis have in common are outlined. By examining some of Freud's work, the author suggests how these could contribute to the study of anthropology and concludes that the dialogue between the disciplines can lead to their cross-fertilization, as long as they do not attempt to replace each other.

Keywords : anthropology; psychoanalysis; identity; belief; otherness.
