Abstract

HERRANZ, Iñaki. Modesty in art: the Musée International des Arts Modestes (MIAM). Alteridades [online]. 2009, vol.19, n.37, pp.23-42. ISSN 2448-850X.

This article explores the scope of curatorial discourse when it aims at creating permeability of interpretation between the aesthetics and the meanings of popular and contemporary art. The exploration takes place through the historic, rhetoric and identity analysis of the MIAM, a museum which closely follows the precepts of new museology, and is oriented towards a novel notion of art, which encompasses the multiple universes, forms and languages of present day visual arts.

Keywords : museology; discourse; seeing; object; aesthetic(s); visual arts; popular art; contemporary art; art brut; art singulier; art amateur; street art/art outsider; MIAM.
