Abstract

NOVELO OPPENHEIM, Victoria. La fuerza de trabajo artesanal mexicana, protagonista ¿permanente? de la industria. Alteridades [online]. 2008, vol.18, n.35, pp.117-126. ISSN 2448-850X.

Are Mexican craft workers permanent protagonists of the industry? The article emphasizes the validity of craftsmanship in México, especially for its flexibility. It reviews the existing occupations and the rank they have inside the so called "microindustria" (cottage industry: distinguished for its small workforce, of no more than 15 people). The concept of craftsmanship used here is more inclusive than others. It focuses in its economic and cultural angles, instead of discussing only the rural or urban production of objects for the internal or tourist markets.

Keywords : cottage industry; craftsmanship; tradition; locality/globality; industry; Mexico.
