Abstract

ZAMORANO VILLARREAL, Claudia Carolina. The children of modernity: social mobility, housing and city production within Mexico City. Alteridades [online]. 2007, vol.17, n.34, pp.75-91. ISSN 2448-850X.

This article attempts to relate social mobility, residential practices as well as social division of urban space to the analysis of the life experience of several middle-class family groups made up of members of two generations. These family groups have been founders of the "Colonia Michoacana", the former Mexican social housing project created in 1936 in the east outskirts of Mexico City. The main analytical subjects are linked from two perspectives: looking at the impacts of this housing project on the labor and residential itineraries of the second generation members (the founders' children) and exploring the contribution of these itineraries to the transformation of the social division of urban space.

Keywords : middle-class; modernity; social mobility; residential practices; social division of urban space.
