GAYTAN-JIMENEZ, Efraín et al. Depressive symptomatology, stress and family functioning in adult mothers from northern Mexico. Acta univ [online]. 2019, vol.29, e2063.  Epub 01-Dez-2019. ISSN 2007-9621.  https://doi.org/10.15174/au.2019.2063.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of depressive symptomatology and to analyze its relationship with perceived stress and family functioning in a sample of adult mothers from northern Mexico. An analytical, observational, cross-sectional research was conducted in a sample of 118 women residing in the Metropolitan Area of La Laguna, Mexico (ZMLL). To evaluate the depressive symptoms, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used; to measure the perceived stress, the perceived stress scale was used; and to assess the family functioning, the intrafamily relations scale was used. The Pearson r coefficient was used to determine the level of correlation between the variables and binomial logistic regression to determine the risk factors for depressive symptomatology in the groups of participants, organized according to age. The results indicate a prevalence of 12.7% of clinically-relevant depressive symptomatology, establishing an eightfold higher risk of presenting depressive symptomatology for participants under 30 years of age, who report low levels of family functioning (OR = 9.60, 95% CI = 1.1-84.5). For participants older than 30 years of age, a 15 times greater risk of presenting depressive symptomatology, when presenting high perceived stress, was determined (OR = 16.65, 95% CI = 2.7-101.3). The risk factors to present depressive symptoms vary according to the age of the woman. This makes it indispensable to implement measures that expand preventive coverage, favoring community models, especially among the most vulnerable groups.
