Abstract

SILVA MARTINEZ, Susana; FLORES VILLANUEVA, Susana  and  BLASS AMADOR, Georgina. REPARACIÓN DE UN GEL A PARTIR DE DESECHOS DE ALUMINIO Y SU USO EN LA ELIMINACIÓN DE ARSÉNICO EN AGUA PARA CONSUMO HUMANO. Rev. Int. Contam. Ambient [online]. 2005, vol.21, n.4, pp.171-181. ISSN 0188-4999.

An aluminum hydroxide gel was prepared employing aluminum coming from empty can wastes of soft drink. Its purity was about 99 % ± 1 %. This gel was employed to remove arsenic from samples of drinking water, spiked with arsenic, coming from arsenic free tap drinking water. The arsenic concentration tested was in the range of 0 to 600 µg L-1. The samples prepared contained arsenic as trivalent, pentavalent or a mix of both arsenic forms in a volumetric ratio of 1:1. The arsenic removal was below the Health Organization World regulatory guidelines (10 µg L-1). The metodology reported here is cheap, easy and it could be used to treat drinking water in places where the population consumes arsenic contaminated drinking water because of the lack of sanitary infraestructure.

Keywords : aluminum hydroxide gel; arsenic remove; treatment of water for human consume.
