Resumen

REBORATTI, Carlos. Geographic Tension: Environmental Disputes and Conflicts in Argentina. Invest. Geog [online]. 2019, n.100, e60015.  Epub 27-Feb-2020. ISSN 2448-7279.  https://doi.org/10.14350/rig.60015.

Three examples of socio-environmental conflicts in different locations of Argentina, showing a different evolution in each case, aim to demonstrate how the analysis of these conflicts improve in terms of richness and detail when two concepts unique to geography are applied: scale and territory. In the three cases, the territorial scopes defined marked the extent and type of development of the stakeholders, as well as the actions undertaken, from conflicts that started at the local level and subsequently spread to the international domain (although without losing their origin). One such case emerged from the installation of a cellulose pulp mill on the Uruguay River; another is the current conflict associated with the installation of fracking companies in northern Patagonia, encompassing an extensive semiarid zone bordered by densely populated irrigation valleys; the third example is the accelerated expansion of soy crops from the center of the country northward and its highly disputed massive use of agrochemicals. The size of the territories and the scale of stakeholders and actions taken play a leading role in the understanding of the complex interrelations of these conflicts.

Palabras llave : socio-environmental conflicts; scale; territory; stakeholders; cellulose pulp; fracking.
