DIAZ CARAVANTES, Rolando Enrique; BRAVO PENA, Luis Carlos; ALATORRE CEJUDO, Luis Carlos  e  SANCHEZ FLORES, Erick. Geospatial analysis of land use and water interaction in the peri-urban area of Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua: A socio-environmental study in northern Mexico. Invest. Geog [online]. 2014, n.83, pp.116-130. ISSN 2448-7279.  https://doi.org/10.14350/rig.32694.

For decades, city growth has been considered only in terms of land availability. In cities of northern Mexico, usually located in arid or semi-arid regions, there is a high dependence on groundwater. For this reason, comprehensive planning urban must consider the peri-urban area not only in terms of soil, but also groundwater. Water transfer for urban use produces severe alterations to the natural environment as aquifer depletion and drastic changes in land use/cover. This paper presents a spatial analysis of land use and water in the peri-urban area of Ciudad Cuauhtémoc. Using geographic modeling and remote sensing we assessed the dynamics of land use/cover. The results indicate that land change processes occur in a context of high competition for water between different users. This process is not usually considered in studies measuring urban spatial expansion, but should be considered to fully understand the effects of urban growth in the territory.
