RAMIREZ HERNANDEZ, José Antonio y FERNANDEZ CHRISTLIEB, Federico. Landscape and identity in El Arbolito, Pachuca, Hidalgo: How young and old express attachment to a former mining district. Invest. Geog [online]. 2013, n.80, pp.71-85. ISSN 2448-7279.
The population of the barrio of El Arbolito worked predominantly in the silver mines on which the city of Pachuca built its wealth from the late 19th century until the 1970s. However, since the mines have declined throughout the city, most local people now work in service industries. This article describes the material changes that can be observed in the landscape of the barrio and the meanings that these changes have for two age groups in the population. Our study shows that the population express attachment or indifference towards the barrio depending on their personal experience of living there and the age range they belong to. The population of El Arbolito also uses these material elements and the meanings they represent to construct their cultural identity.
