Abstract

HERNANDEZ SANTANA, José Ramón; ORTIZ PEREZ, Mario Arturo; MENDEZ LINARES, Ana Patricia  and  GAMA CAMPILLO, Lilia. Morphodynamic of the Tabasco State shoreline, Mexico: trends from the mid 20th century to the present. Invest. Geog [online]. 2008, n.65, pp.7-21. ISSN 2448-7279.

The analysis of the impacts and modifications on the current coastal environments constitutes one of today's main scientific international issues and is highly relevant for local governments, such as case of the Tabasco coastal system. This work exposes the morphodynamic trends of the state coastal margin (coastal recession and/or coastal accretion), based on the application of the cartographic historical-comparative method of the 1943, 1972, 1984 and 1995 cartographic surveys, as well as field observations and geomorphological measurements (2003-2004). These measurements were conducted along the zones with a regime of sustained shoreline recession. Annual rates of the recession are particularly high at the town Sánchez Magallanez (-3 to -5 m/year) and at the mouth of the San Pedro and San Pablo river (-8 to -9 m/year). The coastal morphodynamics investigation allowed the selection of sectors for mid-term and long-term permanent monitoring of the shoreline, as complementary strategy for monitoring the degree of modification of the Tabasco shoreline and its current scenarios of vulnerability. The localities proposed for systematical monitoring are, from West to East: Sánchez Magallanes, El Alacrán, Tupilco's Bar, Beaches El Limón, Dos Bocas y Bruja, the shoreline between San Luis and Ixtapan, all with recessional trend; and La Constancia-San Ramón, and La Barra, both with accretional trend.

Keywords : Coastal morphodynamics; accretion; coastal erosion; Tabasco State.
