Abstract

The objective of this paper is to propose an approximation to the study of the landscape, considering it as a whole of natural and social elements susceptible of being symbolically represented. Three diferet ways of the relationship physical space-culture are analized, they fluctuate between "engagement" and "distancing" and produce diferent ways of spatial representation, which order the spatial experience and produce identities. The New World's discovery and its representations in the Old World are used as examples.
