PRIEGO SANTANDER, Ángel et al. Relationship between landscape heterogeneity and plant species richness in coastal basins of Veracruz, Mexico. Invest. Geog [online]. 2003, n.52, pp.31-52. ISSN 2448-7279.
The landscape heterogeneity varies in the space depending on the proportion between polygons and typological units. The high variability of the geographical space confers it a high ecological connotation, which suggests a narrow relationship with the biodiversity distribution. The aim of this study is to know if we can predict the species richness through indicators of space variability. To clarify this, it was explored the relationship between landscape heterogeneity and the number of flora species, in three coastal basins of the state of Veracruz The landscapes richness, dominance, abundance, and diversity were explanatory variable for species richness. The obtained models explained more than 75% of the relationship. These results indicate that the richness of flora species can be predicted by values of landscape heterogeneity. It is suggested to explore the probable existence of areas with high biodiversity in zones of difficult access or not very well-known, with the use of remote sensors.
