Acapulco is an International tourist destination facing severe social, ecological and urban-land tenure problems whose solutions are neither rapid nor easy. In this study, we examine the process of physical expansion of tourism, particularly from the point of view of its relation with the degradation of the natural vegetation and environmental deterioration. According to our research results, there is a strong correlation between the expansion of tourism and that of the urban area, which has brought about the alteration of some protected natural areas, particularly those located in the higher parts of the bays of Acapulco and Puerto Marqués.
