This paper examines the functional structure of four coastal cities in the state of Guerrero (Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, Tecpan and Petatián), where over one-fifth of the total state population live nowadays. The economic function of these urban places was measured by different methods and techniques of demographic analysis, considering the degree of urbanisation In each of the municipios containing these cities and the structure of the economically active population. As a result of this, an urban typology of these cities based on the structure of the local economy, is presented.
