Resumen

WILLIAMS, Bárbara J.. Paisaje de atraso: aprovechamiento tradicional de la tierra y economía moderna en Huixquilucan, Estado de México. Invest. Geog [online]. 1977, n.8, pp.123-188. ISSN 2448-7279.

Modern economies functioning within traditional landscapes are increasingly characteristic of much of the world. The locus of this study is Huixquilucan, Mexico a complex municipio in the mountainous rim bordering the Valley of Mexico into which the City of Mexico has begun to encroach. The general appearance and pattern of land use within the municipio still give the visual impression that the population is engaged in traditional maize agriculture typical of pre-industrial Mexico. An analysis of the occupation structure of the municipio, however, indicates to the contrary, that the population is largely engaged in and supported by non-farm activity, particularly employment in or connected with Mexico City. The situation has been described in this study as "landscape lag", where the occupation structure of a countryside no longer reflects primary land use. The central problem of the study is to account for this apparent "conflict" between visual impact and statistical fact, i.e. between land use and occupation structure.
