In this paper an anlysis will be made of the conditions of the physical surroundings which determine the natural landscape and exert and influence on the habitat which is characteristic of the predominance which historic, prehispanic and, especially, the land tenure aspects have over it. This analysis was carried out on the zone at the piedemont of the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanos which are located in the central part of the Mexican Republic and whose diverse stages of activity have adjusted the structure at the base of the mountain where ancient nuclei of indian populations are established.
