Abstract

Perceptions in adults with overweight and obesity, and the influence of these ones for their weight control in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas. Estud. soc [online]. 2016, vol.24-25, n.47, pp.380-409. ISSN 0188-4557.

The objective of the research was to analyze factors contributing to self-perception of body shape, disease and food habits in individuals with overweight or obesity. Additionally, to understand how perceptions influenced the motivation and actions related to weight control. The study was conducted using a qualitative and quantitative approach to identify social and cultural factors limiting weight control: Some social and cultural factors influencing weight control are: perception of their own body shape, disease, and risk of disease in absence of symptoms or discomfort, the underestimation of overweight and risk of this, and the control tools for food intake related to emotional issues and the importance of family influence.
