NAVARRO CHAVEZ, José César Lenin; URCIAGA GARCIA, José Isabel  y  AYVAR CAMPOS, Francisco Javier. The role of remittances in income distribution in Mexico and its central west region, 2000-2008. Estud. soc [online]. 2012, vol.20, n.40, pp.239-257. ISSN 0188-4557.

This article aims to analyze the role played by remittances from Mexicans in USA in income distribution in Mexico and its West Central Region during the 2000-2008 period. To begin with, it was found that both, Mexican population residing in the U.S. and their remittances sent home, increased during that period. Subsequently, we explore the theoretical concepts analyzing income distribution and its link with the migration phenomenon. Thus, using the Gini Coefficient and data published by INEGI, through its National Survey on Home Income and Expenditure (ENIGH by its acronym in Spanish) it was possible to estimate that in such a period, Mexico was characterized by having high levels of income concentration; and remittances, as a substantial part of transfers made through public and private institutions, contributed to decrease inequality in income distribution. That evidence the role played by remittances in the lifestyle of Mexican households.
