JUAREZ BOLANOS, Lorena; PARRA VAZQUEZ, Manuel Roberto; MARIACA MENDEZ, Ramón  e  DIAZ HERNANDEZ, Blanca Mayela. Livelihoods of young people in a rural and indigenous space of Mexico. Estud. soc [online]. 2011, vol.19, n.38, pp.91-117. ISSN 0188-4557.

This article presents the results of research conducted in the community of Nuevo Progreso, municipality of Chilon, as a case study of rural and indigenous space of Chiapas, Mexico. Its main objective is to know the direction of reproduction strategies of young people to current changes in society, culture and the economy. The methodological approach is that of Sustainable Livelihoods. Data were collected through participatory workshops, surveys, interviews, participant observation, and literature review. The results were interpreted and explained based on the theoretical framework of reproductive strategies and modes of domination by Pierre Bourdieu (2002). The conclusion is that the lifestyles of the younger generation of Nuevo Progreso are different to that of their parents. On one hand, youth culture is rooted in the Tzeltal culture, and today's context requires a cultural change which renews a cultural matrix. On the other, reproduction strategies of the new peasant generations are directed towards agricultural, labor and pluriactive type of strategies.
