Abstract

VALDEZ-GARDEA, Gloria Ciria et al. Narrowing the digital gap for implementing sanitary traceability: The problem of technology transfer in Sonoran cattle industry, the SITAGAN case. Estud. soc [online]. 2011, vol.19, n.37, pp.141-174. ISSN 0188-4557.

We report the results of an effort to develop methodologies for designing and transferring new technologies to the Sonora beef industry. We identified the need to develop effective, permanent and viable channels of communication with cattlemen, as an indispensable premise for the establishment of technology transfer successful models. Data are shown pointing out to Internet use as the technology with the greatest historical potential to establish this communication bridge. We present results of 30 in-depth semi structured interviews, as well as two surveys among 500 Sonoran cattleman in regards to the publication, promotion and adoption of the software System of Traceability and Cattle Administration (SITAGAN). SITGAN features (functionality and language) were defined based on the needs and concerns expressed by farmers along interviews and the first survey. The second survey helped us to identify channels to promote and educate farmers on the use Internet and software. Two versions were developed to operate SITAGAN, with or without Internet access, both have video tutorials and help for each subject, as well as modules for generating reports and productivity analysis.
