ALVARADO MENDEZ, Ma. Concepción et al. Agricultural restructuring of household production units in San Mateo Ayecac, Tlaxcala, 2000-2008. Estud. soc [online]. 2011, vol.19, n.37, pp.119-140. ISSN 0188-4557.

The objective of this research is to analyze agricultural production in the community of San Mateo Ayecac, Tepetitla in the state of Tlaxcala. Agricultural production is characterized by changes in the labor force and has consequences in the economic structure of the community. Exploratory observation was made in 2008, as well as interviews with key informants and a statistical sample of producers. The results show changes in maize-producing families which result in diminishing work burden, and decreased fertilization and output. However, farming has not been put aside and it remains the basis of family diet and an important food supplier for local markets.

Keywords : structural adjustment; agriculture; peasant; Mexico.
