Abstract

VARELA LLAMAS, Rogelio  and  PALACIO MORENA, Juan Ignacio. Empleo y economías de aglomeración: el caso de la industria de la carne, productos lácteos y conservas alimenticias, 1988-2003. Estud. soc [online]. 2009, vol.17, n.33, pp.199-224. ISSN 0188-4557.

The document presents an analysis to evaluate the effects of intra-industrial and inter-industrial externalities on employment growth for the food, beverages and tobacco industry. It considers data for three sectors: meet (sector 3113), dairy products (sector 3112), and food preserving (sector 3113). The sample includes information for the 32 Mexican federal entities for the years 1988, 1993, 1998 and 2003. The results from estimating a model with Ordinary Least Squares and Generalized Least Squares suggest that external economies, derived from specialization and productive diversity, do not have a positive impact on employment; with the exception of the food preserving sector. Moreover, it is shown that other sectors within the industry have a positive and significant effect on each of the three sectors analyzed.

Keywords : employment growth; dynamic externalities and food industry.
