Resumen

MARTINEZ, Sergio M.  y  URRIETA, Luis. El carguero transnacional: continuidad cultural de una comunidad michoacana. Estud. soc [online]. 2009, vol.17, n.33, pp.111-134. ISSN 0188-4557.

Transnational migration between the US and Mexico has become an important area of research in recent years. This article explores the transnational religious practices of San Miguel, a community in the Lake Pátzcuaro area in the state of Michoacán, México. Specifically, this focused ethnography examines the cargo system from a transnational lens. In it we highlight one family's experience in having a cargo while living in the United States, or what we call a carguero transnacional. We call carguero transnational to the person who fulfills the function of carguero in his origin community while living in the United States. We believe the transnational carguero plays an important role as educator when he/she instills his/her children and grandchildren the aspiration to participate in San Miguel's social life and in the organization of events, the patron's saint celebration in this case. This study's intention is to ethnographically analyze a transnational families situation in which we observe that the first, second, and third generation continue religious and social practices during the patron saint's celebration in san Miguel, Michoacán.

Palabras llave : carguero; transnacionalism; patron saint; second generation.
