Biodiversity conservation counts, among its main intervention mechanisms, with the existence of Natural Protected Areas. The Upper Gulf of California houses the Biosphere Reserve for the Upper Gulf of California and the Colorado River Delta, where not only highly valuable species thrive, and endangered species as well. The later being the reason for creating this refuge. This study analyzes the effectiveness of the Upper Golf Reserve (UGR) as a natural resource protective mechanism, particularly for species at risk, also verifies if fishermen living conditions have improved once the reserve started operations. The exploration was carried out through a survey to fishermen. The main results are summarized this way: Almost 60 % think that UGR has increased their capture, but not their income. Also, 55 % considered that species diversity is higher than before, and improvements in illegal capture regulations are visible; 46 % warns about an increment in alternate activities such as tourism. The study also suggests that it is indispensable to develop a great effort by authorities and organized groups to find management solutions for UGR; so that a program can be established to allow endangered species recovery and increase fishermen living standards, thereby ensuring a balance between conservation, fishery sustainability and fishermen welfare in the UGR.
