SANCHEZ NUNEZ, Edmundo. Conocimiento tradicional mazahua de la herpetofauna: un estudio etnozoológico en la Reserva de la Biósfera Mariposa Monarca, México. Estud. soc [online]. 2006, vol.14, n.28, pp.43-66. ISSN 0188-4557.

There are different indigenous communities in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, each one having specific relationships with the environment. The research carried out in a Mazahua community named Francisco Serrato shows diverse aspects concerning the traditional relationships established by the inhabitants with local species of amphibians and reptiles; some characteristics of this traditional knowledge are analysed. Traditional herpethological knowledge about anatomy, nomenclature, biology, values and myths associated to these species is discussed. Mazahua people have traditional knowledge about 14 species distributed in the area. Finally, it is important to establish that 50% of the reptiles and amphibians recorded in the locality have a legal status of protection according to Mexican regulations.

Palavras-chave : mazahuas; herpetofauna; etnozoology; Monarch butterfly biosphere reserve; Mexico.
