This paper attempts to contribute to the discussion on efficiency in Mexican public state universities. Based on the methodological approach of Simar and Wilson (2007), Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and a truncated regression model with bootstrapping are used to evaluate the performance of 34 universities in 2015 and the determinants that explain changes in efficiency compared to 2017. The results provide evidence that GDP per capita, poverty rate and interstate migration rate are environmental aspects that exogenously impact institutional efficiency, while institutional aspects such as full-time professors, number of researchers, age of the institution and female enrollment affect efficiency levels.
