SANDOVAL GARCIA, Edgar Roberto y FRANCO GONZALEZ, Rosa Laura Patricia Edith. Socio-Environmental Benefits Derived from Energy Efficiency in the Mexican Industrial Sector. Econ: teor. práct [online]. 2021, n.54, pp.89-108. Epub 02-Jul-2021. ISSN 2448-7481. https://doi.org/10.24275/etypuam/ne/542021/sandoval.
The energy consumption of the industrial sector represented 35% of the country’s net total in 2017. This sector contributes approximately one third of the national GDP. Given the importance of energy and its efficient use for sustainable development, Mexico has proposed the energy efficiency goal of reducing energy intensity by 1.9% annually during the 2016-2030 period. To identify the potential of the socio-environmental benefits of reaching the energy efficiency goal in terms of reducing carbon emissions and creating jobs, this study is based on a quantitative analysis of information related to the industrial sector performance and energy consumption trend projection, which led to quantifying potential values of carbon reduction of 84.5 Mt CO2 and the creation of 561,559 jobs annually by 2030.
