The aim of this paper is to evidence the causal link between cognitive division of labor that determines certain organizational structures and process innovation through the case study of a major Mexican biotechnology company. The research question is to determine to what extent the organizational structure derived from the cognitive division of labor determines the innovative success of firm. The main argument put forward is that in some high-tech companies such as the one presented in this paper is especially relevant their internal cognitive structure, to the point of becoming the primary determinant of their innovative activities. A theoretical framework explain the relationship between cognitive division of labor, organizational structure and business innovation, and some empirical evidence show the innovative performance of the analyzed firm. The methodology used is a case study based on extensive interviews and active corroboration.
