The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the artistic prose contained in Panegírico a la paciencia, written by New Spain author Luis de Sandoval Zapata. In spite of the fact that Sandoval’s work has been reexamined and viewed in positive light since the 20th century, it is also true that research and analysis have focused primarily on his poetic work. Sandoval’s text shows a distinct tendency toward hyperbaton placing the subject at the end of the sentences, and it can be broken down into a series of minor textual units having a relatively stable structure: first a kind of encryption where the writer sets forth an enigma, then the explanation and often a subsequent metaphorization. By analyzing these two elements -hyperbata and textual units-, the paper intends to show that Sandoval’s text seeks to provoke a kind of comprehension delay in the reader, and that the richness of the Panegírico is grounded both in this and the continuous use of metaphor.
