Just as with Latin American novels as a whole, the translation of Mexican novels began in the late 1920s. In spite of the importance of the translations in order to get to know the beginnings of the diffusion of Mexican literature in linguistic domains other than Spanish, their history has not been written so far. This article offers an overview of the development of the process. It points out that the first translations were not promoted by the authors or original editors, but by third parties; were undertaken on the basis of contracts signed by the editors and authors, be it directly or through intermediaries; generally did not generate economic benefits; and, in contrast to what has been argued, the translations into French were only in some cases the source of the translations into other European languages.
