Resumen
VIU ADAGIO, Julieta. Chronicle after the Great Divide. Carlos Monsiváis among Vedettes and Idols. Lit. mex [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.1, pp.125-144. ISSN 2448-8216. https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.litmex.29.1.2018.1063.
The literary chronicles about divas, idols and celebrities written by Carlos Monsiváis during the 70s and 80s for weekly publications evince a turning point within the modernist literary chronicle, since the incorporation of mass culture poses a challenge in the face of the modern organization of the literary field, based on the division between high art and mass culture. We use the chronicle denomination after the Great Divide (Huyssen, 2006) to refer to this reconfiguration process: we pose the transformation of “social pages” into literary chronicles; we pause to examine the author’s peculiar self-figuration as a blend between Albert Camus and Ringo Starr, to finally consider Monsiváis as a transculturator of literary chronicle.
