MARTINEZ ANDRADE, Marina. The Manual de viajeros by Marco Arróniz. Lit. mex [online]. 2011, vol.22, n.1, pp.75-97. ISSN 2448-8216.
The objective for study in this article revolves around El Manual de viajeros en México, ó compendio de la historia de la ciudad de México, written by Marcos Arróniz, published in Paris, 1850, for the purpose of satisfying the enormous interest of a broad reading public for everything happening beyond the oceans, and to inform about the history, cultural development, geography, literature, points of interest, services, Mexican usages and customs to the trail of travelers who came to the country during the 19th century, following the footsteps of the Great Traveler, Alexander von Humboldt. El Manual was written in the tradition of travel guides, a genre or subgenre little studied by literary criticism, which can be situated on the boundaries of travel literature, where, on the one hand, the image of the world to which one belongs is projected, while, on the other, the images one has about others.
Palavras-chave : Marcos Arróniz; Humboldt; travel guides; typology; imagology; travelers vs. tourists.
