KOHUT, Karl. The first decades of independent Mexico as seen and judged by German authors. Lit. mex [online]. 2010, vol.21, n.1, pp.157-180. ISSN 2448-8216.

The analysis of the first perceptions by Germans of the history of independent Mexico permits us to observe two trends. The first, and largest, sustained by actors or observers within the political arena, considered Mexico incapable of governing itself. The second, and smaller, is owed to authors whose relationship with Mexico was essentially economic. These did not deny the difficult situation in the country, but did not consider it unredeemable. Within this positive vision, the economic interests played an important role in a much broader sense. Within the first mentioned trend, the idea stood out that only the installation of a European monarchy would save the disastrous situation in which the country found itself. Thus, decades before the installing of Maximilian's Empire, there existed in European political circles, an intuition of what was to occur much later.

Palavras-chave : Maximilian's Empire; Independent Mexico (1810-1860); foreign perceptions; German travelers; German historians.
