The article proposes a critical overview of contemporary communication history, theory and research in order to transit from genealogical reconstructions of the field, toward reconstructions grounded in objects of knowledge. It also analyzes the emergence of subfields of knowledge and the role history has had in the constitution of the field of communication, its history and research practice.
