Abstract

RIBES, Alberto Javier. Simmel and Ortega y Gasset on emancipation and individuality. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2021, vol.83, n.3, pp.523-546.  Epub Sep 13, 2021. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2021.3.60131.

Both George Simmel and José Ortega y Gasset reflected on the possibilities of emancipated life in the face of the difficulties imposed by modernity. In both of them, emancipation is sought in the creativity and in the performance of the individual in interaction, in the face of the problems derived from inhabiting petrified societies. These societies force alienation by keeping individuals from realizing their potential and fully developing their individuality, as well as by colonizing social interactions and emptying them of live and transformative force.

Keywords : social theory; George Simmel; José Ortega y Gasset; intersubjectivity; emancipation.
