On September 19th, 1985, a powerful earthquake devastated Mexico City, causing severe material and psychological damage. Exactly 32 years later, on September 19th, 2017, another earthquake struck the country’s capital. Through the analysis of the main national newspapers in September 2017, the awakening of memories of what was experienced or heard about 1985 was observed: comparisons were the thrust of public debates, mobilizing memories linked to the affected areas, citizen solidarity, youth mobilization in rescue efforts and government inaction.
