Abstract

This article describes the forms of domination and the effective exercise of authority in the haciendas of Ocosingo, Chiapas. Narration, descriptions and perceptions of laborers, foremen and employers are analyzed to understand the rules that prevailed, together with reflections on the social hierarchy. The article presents the indigenous population's interpretations of their experience with domination, authority and power, and the reasons that led the laborers to leave the hacienda and subsequently set up a new community.
