Abstract

AMPUDIA DE HARO, Fernando. An Eliasian interpretation of the financial crisis. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2012, vol.74, n.3, pp.363-394. ISSN 2594-0651.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the current economic and financial crisis using key concepts from the sociology of Norbert Elias as a theoretical reference. Understanding the financial system as a global configuration, the author proceeds to analyze its social logic of functioning on the basis of a triple vector of forces -interdependence, competition and hetero-control- and examines its relations with certain models of sociability and behavior. As a function of this analysis, the author proposes an interpretation of the crisis as a decivilizing dynamic that promotes indifference and de-identification as patterns of behavior.

Keywords : financial crisis; Norbert Elias; interdependence; decivilization; heterocontrol; competition.
