Expropriation simultaneously mobilizes state power and private property. When analyzed, expropriation brings about the chance to explore the transformations of contemporary states in the context of globalization. An overview of world trends in the expropriation regimes shows that it is not a homogeneous process. Two hypotheses are proposed: that the most important change involves replacing the tension between public interest and private interest with the tension between local and global interest and that there is a link between the issues under debate and the contexts of discussion.
