LOPEZ LEYVA, Miguel Armando. Social Movements in the Incipient Mexican Democracy: The UNAM Strike (1999-2000) and the Zapatista March (2000-2001). Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2008, vol.70, n.3, pp.541-587. ISSN 2594-0651.
What effect has the political environment had on social movements as a result of the establishment of democracy in 1997? This article argues that the social movements that have emerged since then have not accepted the limitationsimposed by this regime, despite using the institutional resources they have been offered. The author attempts to illustrate this through analysis, by applying the political process model (also known as the political opportunities structure) to two particular cases: the UNAM strike, organized by the General Strike Council (1999-2000) and the indigenous march to Mexico City, led by the National Zapatista Liberation Army (2000-2001).
