The article analyzes Carlos Alberto Madrazo's arrival at the National Executive Committee of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the political environment of his arrival, his attempt to reform the party by  introducing selection practices through the direct election of representatives in the party and candidacies for popularly-elected posts, a reform that challenged the tradition of vertical political authority and the designation of candidates toelected positions in Mexico.
