GIMENEZ, Gilberto. Culture, identity and global metropolitanism. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2005, vol.67, n.3, pp.483-512. ISSN 2594-0651.

Globalization has essentially a urban character if we define it as a complex interconnection between "global cities" through webs supported by new information and communication technologies. On the cultural level, its main and more visible effect is the general reorganization of culture within urban space, at the expense of rural and provincial cultures which tend to break down, together with their respective economies. We must add to that the making up of "diaspora cultures" linked to international migration processes, as well as the rise (by reaction) of a new ecological humanism derived from the conscience, at a worldwide level, of the nonsustainability of globalization under its present neo-liberal form.

Palavras-chave : globalization; global cities; metropolitanism; webs; culture; diasporas; ecological humanism; social identities.
