Abstract

MARTINEZ, María Antonia. Political Representation and the Quality of Democracy. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2004, vol.66, n.4, pp.661-710. ISSN 2594-0651.

The aim of this article is to reflect on the notion of political representation, assuming that we can use this concept to qualify democracy and given that, albeit with different implications, the vast majority of today's democratic regimes fall into this category. The analysis of the concept of political representation begins with the consideration that one of its defining elements is its multidimensional nature. The author reflects on some of the criticisms of representative democracy and the models designed to overcome some of its limitations.

Keywords : representative democracy; crisis of representation; quality of democracy; deliberation; participation.
