Abstract

MORENO MARTINEZ, Luis. Naming, defining and shaping: Modesto Bargalló and the chemical terminology (1947-1973). Educ. quím [online]. 2021, vol.32, n.1, pp.122-132.  Epub Aug 13, 2021. ISSN 0187-893X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fq.18708404e.2021.1.75877.

Modesto Bargalló (1894-1981) was an outstanding figure of the twentieth-century chemistry education in Spain and Mexico. Starting from the unprecedented study of his numerous contributions to chemical terminology between 1947 and 1973, this paper explores the active role of teaching in the debates about naming and defining the chemical concepts and its epistemological implications. The analysis has pointed out the importance of semantic phenomena with respect to the decisions about chemical terminology with didactic purposes, and the deep relations between naming matter and shaping scientific disciplines.
