Abstract

SALGADO-CHAVARRIA, David  and  PALACIOS-ALQUISIRA, Joaquín. One Hundred Years of Macromolecular Chemistry. Educ. quím [online]. 2021, vol.32, n.1, pp.20-30.  Epub Aug 13, 2021. ISSN 0187-893X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fq.18708404e.2021.1.76662.

Last year, Macromolecular Chemistry celebrated its first centenary. In 1920, the organic chemist Hermann Staudinger, published his famous article Über Polymerisation (On Polymerization), proposing the existence of long chains of very high molecular weight, in which atoms are held together through covalent chemical bonding. Over the course of these 100 years, Polymer Chemistry has advanced rapidly, being recognized nowadays as one of the most active branches in research, developing new useful products with a wide range of applications.

This work deals with relevant aspects of the history of Macromolecular Chemistry. Some of the most important names of researchers who helped developing this science during the 20th century are mentioned and here are also appointed some of the professors who started teaching about polymers in Mexico, specifically at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

Keywords : History of Chemistry; Macromolecular Chemistry; Polymers.
