DOMINGUEZ, Laura  y  AMADOR-BEDOLLA, Carlos. The origin of COVID-19: what is known, what is supposed and (a little) about conspiracy theories. Educ. quím [online]. 2020, vol.31, n.2, pp.3-11.  Epub 25-Ene-2021. ISSN 0187-893X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fq.l8708404e.2020.2.75461.

COVID-19 paralyzes the world at the beginning of 2020. Concomitantly, disinformation and fake news around the virus are abundant and change constantly. Ever since the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Wuhan, China, an increasing number of discussions about its origin have been established. A popular and malignant one is the "conspiracy theory" which states that human ingenuity was involved in the creation of this virus with evil intents. Presently, due to chemistry, biochemistry and computational sciences we know with almost certainty -except for minor details- how the virus was originated. In this review two particular characteristics of the SARS-CoV-2 virus' spike protein are described. These two allow contact and entrance into the human cells, they also allow the scientific community to understand the virus phylogeny and its relationship with other viruses, thus defining its origin.

Palabras llave : Coronavirus; SARS-CoV-2; spike (S) protein; zoonosis; COVID-19.
