Abstract

HARO CASTELLANOS, Jorge A. et al. Assessment of the students by means of a regent in the learning of the atomic structure. A case study. Educ. quím [online]. 2019, vol.30, n.3, pp.34-42.  Epub Nov 30, 2019. ISSN 0187-893X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fq.18708404e.2019.3.67145.

There are topics for students in an undergraduate course of general chemistry which are more difficult to understand than others, producing bottlenecks in the progress of learning of these subjects. In the process of improving the teaching-learning of general chemistry, the knowledge of atomic structure is essential to understanding molecular structure and consequently the chemical behavior of substances. In order to identify and develop the skills necessary of students to succeed in the study of atomic structure, a reagent was applied, this test includes: atomic number, mass number, number of protons, neutrons and electrons, names and symbols of elements, Pauli exclusion principle, Hund’s rule, Aufbau principle, electron configuration, valence electrons, noble gas core (kernel); all with the support of the periodic table. This study shows that the concepts of atomic structure more difficult to understand by students are: Aufbau principle, valence electrons, kernel and electron configuration in such order, respectively. Concepts of atomic structure easier to understand by students are Pauli exclusion principle and Hund’s rule.

Keywords : Atomic structure; electron configuration; Pauli exclusion principle; Hund’s rule; Aufbau principle.
