Abstract
MELLO, Flávia de et al. Determination of residual oil saponification: an experience in chemistry education under the stse and green chemical perspectives. Educ. quím [online]. 2019, vol.30, n.1, pp.21-30. Epub Oct 14, 2019. ISSN 0187-893X.
This article reports on a teaching project, linked to research and extension under the Science-Technology-Society-Environment (STSE) and Green Chemistry (GC) perspectives. Through the extension project “Fábrica Escola de Detergentes” (Detergent Factory at the school), residual frying oil was collected in order to produce ecological soap. After that, the optimization of soap formulation was carried out through the investigation of chemical greenness using holistic and mass metrics. All the stages were connected to teaching activities, such as theoretical-experimental classes, minicourses and workshops for students and locals. The investigation of the chemical greenness in the initial soap formulation demonstrated the excessive use of sodium hydroxide (169.7%), and in the formulation improvement it was possible to adjust the amount of reagent for the total incorporation of the reagent atoms into the product, as described in the second GC principle. Regarding the teaching, this project allowed the undergraduate students to get in touch with a socio-environmental issue and seek solutions through scientific research. In this way, the project showed great potential to work conceptual aspects in the teachers’ formation and in the basic education, under the STSE and GC perspectives, by bringing a great impact socio-environmental issue like the inadequate waste oil disposal.
