Resumen

SANCHEZ DIRZO, Rafael  y  SILVA CASARIN, Rodolfo. Hydrogen Fuel for Rankine Cycle. Educ. quím [online]. 2009, vol.20, n.2, pp.176-181. ISSN 0187-893X.

As we become more conscious of the problem of global warming, CO2 is seen as the principal villain in the drama, though it is not the only substance involved. Since the production of CO2 comes mainly from motor vehicles and electricity-generating processes, most investigation is focused on energy saving and improving efficiency in these two areas. In this paper we address the question of electricity generation. The Rankine cycle is the means by which most electricity is generated, using heat combustion, with consequent polluting emissions. By changing the combustion material, from oil, gas or coal, to hydrogen, as in electrolysis cycles, we could eliminate the emissions and recycle the hydrogen. At present only 2% of the electricity generated worldwide comes from renewable, non-polluting sources (sun, wind and sea). In this article we look at the possibility of harnessing sea power to produce the energy required to burn hydrogen in an innovative Rankine cycle which would allow us to produce electricity without further contaminating the planet.
