Abstract

CARRILLO FERREIRA, Hugo José. Imaginaries about the Border and Interethnic Relations: The Role of Nicolas Prieto in The Colombian Guajira. Frontera norte [online]. 2018, vol.30, n.60, pp.131-152. ISSN 2594-0260.  https://doi.org/10.17428/rfn.v30i60.1507.

This article discusses the 19th-century perceptions and strategies described by the governor of Riohacha, Nicolas Prieto, regarding border problems involving La Guajira (now a department of Colombia occupying the northernmost peninsula of South America). Prieto’s biography and his colonization plans are key to studying the perceptions elites had of the political borders that delimited the civilized world of the Colombian nation-state (then the Republic of New Granada) under construction and what was termed the barbarian space of La Guajira, populated by the Wayuu indigenous people.

Keywords : borderlands; descriptions; officials; La Guajira; Colombia.
